Despite what is commonly believed, they are only able to exhibit cognitive empathy. Affective empathy is also highly present in some.

Because it is so terrible to imagine that someone may feel your grief and still commit horrible acts, we prefer to conceive of callous people as being unfeeling.

When harming others, dark empaths are skilled at repressing their feelings or using reason to support their acts. Put another way, even if they want to distance themselves, they can still feel your suffering intensely.

Associated personality qualities: stronger narcissistic tendencies and lower agreeableness. Though they are more concerned with themselves than with you. Most likely traumatized in a similar manner.

An empath who turns dark might have gone through something that made them lose faith in people.

And this the distinction between a sociopath and a dark empath: sociopaths only possess cognitive empathy rather than affective empathy. Affective empathy is felt by Dark Empaths, although they choose to be separate from it.

Because sociopaths aren’t sensitive to pain, Dark Empaths are perceived as being more frightening than Sociopaths in some situations.

Deeply sensitive, empaths have mastered the art of indifference. Dark Empaths have heightened emotional awareness, which they can leverage as a psychological tool.

In conclusion, one of the main reasons why an Empath develops dark triad qualities is from experiencing profound trauma, particularly when it involves some form of betrayal.
