If you grew up with a narcissistic parent, the journey to breaking free from their legacy can be transformative — one of reclaiming yourself from shadows you didn’t cast.

By “narcissist,” I mean those who meet the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder or exhibit strong narcissistic tendencies.

Their presence shapes more than just the home — it molds the lens through which you see yourself.

In working with many individuals raised in such environments, I’ve found key pillars of healing. These elements, embraced at any stage of life, can guide you toward freedom — whether or not the narcissist remains in your orbit.

Letting go of the victim role

Did you often feel small, trapped, or overshadowed as a child?

Narcissistic parents often erode their children’s sense of self to maintain control, ensuring their needs eclipse yours.

But here’s the truth: victimhood, while familiar, chains you to the past. It can color your adult life, leaving you feeling powerless in situations that remind you of your childhood.
