It’s just that the wounding that took place prevents the person from developing past this level. From the perspective of emotional development, they are in a way stuck in the past.

It’s not difficult to draw comparisons between an adult narcissist and an infant when you think about their behavior.

It can also happen when parents indulge their children while being inattentive. For instance, the parents might buy gifts and toys for the child to keep them engaged even though they are constantly too busy or simply emotionally distant from the youngster.

The message that is conveyed to the youngster is that they are entitled to anything they desire in place of love.

Even when you try your best as an adult to connect with the narcissist, they are unable to do so. However, they will count on you to give them whatever it is that they desire.

It can also happen if you grew up in a narcissistic environment. Typically, a narc parent will choose a golden child and a scapegoat. They will transfer their guilt to the scapegoat, who typically develops into a codependent adult.
