Oftentimes than not, they fear the mere idea to admitting that they are untruthful and untrustworthy people. It plays into their eventual demise from due to saturated pride.
They could not bear to admit all the times they have lied or done wrong. So all they can do is try to find an excuse, shift blame, or change narratives in an attempt to find someone who will take their side.
